About This Route

A scenic alpine route in the High Tatras, connecting Zakopane with the trailhead to the famous Morskie Oko mountain lake.

Detailed Route Guide

The Oswald Balzer Road (Droga Oswalda Balzera) is a legendary mountain route in the Polish High Tatras. Named after Oswald Balzer, a prominent Polish historian and lawyer, the 25-kilometer road connects the famous alpine resort of Zakopane with Palenica Białczańska, the starting trailhead for Morskie Oko — the most celebrated mountain lake in the Tatra Mountains. Built in the early 20th century, the road runs along the northern slopes of the Tatra range, weaving through dense spruce forests and crossing mountain torrents, offering spectacular, up-close views of Poland's highest granite peaks.

Driving the Oswald Balzer Road in a vintage van requires caution. The route is hilly, with steady climbs and descents that test older cooling systems, particularly during the summer. The road starts in Zakopane at around 850 meters and climbs to over 1,100 meters at Palenica Białczańska. One of the early highlights is the chapel in Jaszczurówka, a wooden masterpiece of the Zakopane architectural style built entirely without iron nails. From there, the road winds eastwards, passing mountain meadows where shepherds sell smoked oscypek cheese. The final stretch descends into the Rybi Potok valley. The parking lot at Palenica Białczańska is extremely popular and must be booked online in advance — note that vehicles are not allowed past this point, and visitors must complete the 9km journey to Morskie Oko on foot or by horse-drawn carriage.

The rewards of this route are the incredible alpine vistas and highland culture. The High Tatras rise like a jagged granite wall above the forests, their peaks snow-covered well into summer. Morskie Oko (literally 'Eye of the Sea') is a breathtaking glacial lake surrounded by vertical stone walls rising over 1,000 meters above the dark green water, with Rysy (Poland's highest peak at 2,499m) towering in the background. The area is also rich in wildlife, including Tatra chamois and marmots. Be prepared for alpine weather changes and note that this is one of Poland's busiest areas in July and August.
