About This Route

Discover the 'Provence of Belgium' in the south. This route takes you from the historic Bastogne through the warmer microclimate of the Gaume region to Torgny, Belgium's southernmost village known for its vineyards and golden stone houses. A journey from the war history of the Battle of the Bulge to the gentle, sun-kissed hills bordering France.

Detailed Route Guide

The Gaume region is Belgium's best-kept secret — a sun-soaked pocket in the extreme south of the country with a microclimate so mild that vineyards thrive and the architecture shifts from the grey slate of the Ardennes to warm golden limestone. The route begins in Bastogne, a town permanently marked by its role in the December 1944 Battle of the Bulge, where American forces held out against a German encirclement in brutal winter conditions. The Bastogne War Museum is among the finest WWII museums in Europe, and the distinctive Mardasson memorial on the edge of town demands a visit before you head south into more peaceful countryside.

As you drive south through Neufchâteau and into the Gaume proper, the landscape softens. Forests give way to open, sun-lit valleys. The charming town of Florenville offers a sweeping panorama over the Semois river valley and is a natural lunch stop. A short detour from the main route brings you to Orval Abbey, a still-active Cistercian monastery producing one of Belgium's most revered Trappist beers since the 12th century. The abbey ruins and adjacent brewery shop are unmissable. The final destination is Torgny, Belgium's southernmost village, where vines grow on terraces of warm limestone and a handful of excellent restaurants have made this tiny place a gastronomic pilgrimage.

For T3 drivers, this route presents only minor challenges. The road between Bastogne and Neufchâteau rolls gently over the Ardennes plateau — nothing strenuous for a well-tuned engine. South of Neufchâteau the road flattens considerably into the Gaume. The narrow lanes around Torgny deserve attention, and parking in the village is limited. Fuel up in Florenville or Virton before the final approach, and plan for a leisurely pace — the Gaume was built for it.

This route is genuinely excellent in all seasons. Spring brings orchids and wild garlic along the Semois valley. Summer makes Torgny a festive, sun-drenched destination with harvest activity in late August and September. Autumn sees the forested hillsides around Florenville turn golden. Even winter has its appeal: the contrast between Bastogne's WWII solemnity and the surprising mildness of the Gaume a few kilometres south is a compelling narrative for any traveller seeking depth in their driving routes.
