About This Route

Funen (Fyn), Denmark's garden island: Odense and the Hans Christian Andersen museums, moated Egeskov Castle and thatched villages on gently rolling lanes. Easy for classic and low-power campervans; May blossom is the peak season for orchards and castle gardens. Farm campsites and harbour stays — wild camping banned. Budget the Storebælt bridge toll if arriving from Zealand. One to two gentle days; castle gardens and harbour towns set the pace, not motorway miles. Fuel in Odense before quieter southern lanes.

Detailed Route Guide

Funen — or Fyn in Danish — sits at the geographical and spiritual heart of Denmark, a fertile island known since the 19th century as the 'Garden of Denmark' for its rolling orchards, abundant farmland, and gentle, pastoral beauty. It is also the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen, the storyteller who gave the world The Little Mermaid, Thumbelina, and The Ugly Duckling, and who spent his formative years in the city of Odense. The connection between Andersen's imagination and the Funen landscape is deep — the fairytale castles, the thatched cottages, the winding lanes through apple-blossom country — and driving through Funen today is to enter the geographical reality of those stories.

The route begins in Odense, Denmark's third-largest city and a vibrant university town with an excellent old centre. The Hans Christian Andersen Museum — recently completely rebuilt as a world-class attraction — is the obvious first stop. From Odense the route winds south through a series of increasingly pretty landscapes, past manor houses and through thatched-roof villages that haven't changed much since Andersen's time. Faaborg, a perfectly preserved medieval market town on the south coast, makes an excellent lunch stop — its painted merchants' houses, smoked fish harbour, and views across to the small islands are quintessentially Funen. The finale is Egeskov Castle, one of the best-preserved Renaissance water castles in Europe, dating from 1554, built on a foundation of thousands of oak piles driven into the lake bed. The castle gardens include vintage car and motorcycle museums, vintage aircraft, and tree-top adventure courses that make it an excellent stop for all ages.

For classic and low-power campervans, Funen is Danish paradise. The roads are uniformly flat to very gently rolling, the surfaces are excellent, and the lanes are quiet except on summer weekends. The narrow country roads between villages are tight but not problematic for a standard classic campervan. Fuel is available in Odense and Faaborg. One practical note: Egeskov has substantial parking for coaches and cars, easily accommodating any size of campervan, and the entry fee covers access to all the museum collections within the grounds.

The very best time to drive Funen is May, when the fruit trees are in full blossom and the landscape is suffused with pink and white flowers — genuinely one of the most beautiful spring scenes in Northern Europe. June and July are warm and long-eveninged, perfect for camping in the surrounding meadows. The harvest season in August and September brings farm shops to life with local produce. Funen is generally quieter than North Zealand and makes an excellent overnight base, with numerous farm campsites and small harbour hostels throughout the island.

Crossing from Zealand means the Storebælt bridge toll — budget before you roll on with a loaded camper. Funen's farm campsites and small harbours are the legal overnight options. Quiet lanes between villages are narrow: pull into passing places for oncoming traffic and keep an eye on cyclists in May–August.

Odense's Andersen museums and Egeskov's moated silhouette are the headline stops; Faaborg and the southern archipelago add harbour calm. May blossom and June light are the sweet spots before July crowds. Keep daily mileage low — Funen rewards bakery stops and castle gardens more than covering the whole island in one push.

Frequently Asked Questions

Absolutely. The redesigned museum, which opened in 2021 with architecture by Kengo Kuma, is one of the most imaginative cultural attractions in Scandinavia. It weaves Andersen's biography and fairy tales into an immersive, dreamlike experience that works equally well for children and adults. The underground galleries incorporate the site of Andersen's actual childhood home. Plan 2-3 hours minimum.
Egeskov Castle was built between 1554 and 1554 and is one of the best-preserved Renaissance island castles in Europe. The name means 'Oak Forest' — the castle rests on an underwater foundation of thousands of oak piles driven vertically into the lake bed. The piles remain perfectly preserved because they are constantly submerged. The castle is still privately owned and inhabited by the Ahlefeldt-Laurvig family.
Funen's fertile soil produces excellent apples, pears, and cherries — farm shops (gårdbutik) along the country roads sell fresh fruit, apple juice, and cider in season. Local cheeses and smoked meats are also widely available. In Faaborg and Svendborg, the harbourside smokehouses sell freshly smoked herring and mackerel. Funen is also known for its strawberries in June and July.
Several of the small islands around Funen are accessible by ferry and do allow vehicles. Ærø, reached by ferry from Svendborg (75 min crossing), is particularly beautiful with preserved 18th-century towns and excellent cycling roads. Langeland is connected to Funen by bridge. These islands are ideal for multi-day van exploration as extensions to the main route.
Funen is excellent for families. Egeskov Castle has museums for vintage vehicles, vintage aircraft, tree-top walkways, and extensive gardens. The Hans Christian Andersen Museum is designed to engage children directly. The beaches of the south Funen archipelago are calm and safe. The flat terrain makes it easy for children to cycle on the quieter country roads alongside a van.
