Mani Peninsula Full Loop

One hundred and eighty kilometres loop through the Mani peninsula from Kalamata delivers tower-house villages, olive terraces, and a road that ends at Cape Tenaro — the southernmost tip of mainland Greece where the Ionian and Aegean meet in a confusion of currents and ancient myth. This is a two-to-three-day circuit on winding coastal and mountain roads where stone Maniot towers rise above every village like medieval skyscrapers built for family feuds rather than commerce. A classic low-power campervan handles the Mani if you respect gradients toward Areopoli and the exposed ridge toward Gerolimenas, though the narrow lanes through Oitylo and Limeni require mirror-folding patience when meeting oncoming traffic.

Areopoli is the Mani's capital in spirit if not in administration — a stone town of square towers, cobbled lanes, and tavernas serving siglino (smoked pork) and local olive oil pressed from Koroneiki trees that cover every hillside. Southward, the road drops to Limeni, a harbour where the Mavromichalis family once ruled and turquoise water laps against taverna tables at the water's edge. Cape Tenaro (Cavo Matapan) terminates the peninsula with a lighthouse walk past ruins of a temple to Poseidon and a cave entrance locals once called the gate to Hades — park at the end of the asphalt and walk the final kilometre rather than risking soft ground with a loaded campervan.

The inland return through Kotronas and coastal sections toward Stoupa and Kardamyli adds beaches where Patrick Leigh Fermor wrote and olive groves that supply Kalamata's famous purple fruit. Kardamyli's old town preserves tower houses restored by the Fermor family trust, and the Ritsa beach pull-off suits a campervan swim stop. Kalamata at the loop's start and finish offers fuel, LPG if available, and a waterfront promenade where sundried figs and olives fill market stalls — a practical resupply point before tackling the narrow southern lanes again.

Campervan travellers find aires and small campgrounds near Stoupa, Kardamyli, and Gerolimenas, but wild camping on Mani beaches is discouraged and often cleared by municipal patrols. Roads are narrow — use lay-bys for photos rather than stopping on blind bends. April and May bring wildflowers on terraced slopes without summer heat; October offers golden light on stone towers and empty coastal tavernas. July and August concentrate Italian and Athenian holiday traffic on the Stoupa–Kardamyli section — start early or accept slow progress. Two days covers Areopoli, Limeni, and Tenaro; add a third for Kardamyli walks and Kalamata resupply without rushing the southern tip.

This longer Mani circuit differs from the shorter Gytheio–Areopoli Deep Mani loop by starting in Kalamata and linking Outer Mani (Kardamyli, Stoupa) with the tower country of Areopoli, Limeni, Gerolimenas, Vathia, and Cape Tenaro before returning north. Expect more olive-grove driving, more resupply options around Kalamata and Kardamyli, and the same narrow stone lanes once you enter the Deep Mani. Classic campervans should fold mirrors in Oitylo and Limeni, avoid soft ground at the Tenaro trailhead, and treat Diros cave parking as a day stop rather than an overnight. If you have already driven the shorter Mani Peninsula Loop, use this full circuit to add Kardamyli’s Fermor associations and Kalamata’s market resupply without repeating every Deep Mani kilometre twice — or reverse the order and do Outer Mani first while your van is freshly fuelled.
