Complete circuit of Thassos — marble quarries, pine beaches, and the greenest island in the Aegean.
Ninety-five kilometres looping from Limenas (Thassos Town) circle Greece's northernmost Aegean island — a green marble island where ancient quarries supplied temples across the classical world, beaches ring a forested interior, and ferry access from Keramoti on the mainland makes this an ideal campervan island hop. The coastal road is mostly gentle circumnavigation with occasional steep hairpins on the east coast between Aliki and Livadi, manageable for a VW T3 in second gear but requiring caution when meeting coaches on narrow sections. Allow two days for the full loop plus ferry logistics — one day clockwise with swimming stops, one day for inland marble sites and the mountain village of Theologos.
Reach the island via ferry from Keramoti (twenty minutes, frequent sailings in season) or Kavala's larger port — book campervan tickets in advance for July and August when vehicle decks fill by mid-morning. Limenas opens the loop with a harbour backed by an ancient agora, theatre, and acropolis ruins where marble columns lie scattered like furniture in a giant's abandoned salon. Golden Beach (Chrisi Ammoudia) on the east coast delivers the island's longest sand arc — campervan parking exists in signed lots behind the beach, but overnight camping on sand is prohibited and enforced.
Aliki on the southeast peninsula preserves twin ancient marble quarries where partially carved columns still lie in situ above turquoise coves — a UNESCO-listed site where swimming below the quarries is permitted in calm weather. Theologos village in the interior offers stone Macedonian architecture, grilled goat in taverna courtyards, and cooler air above the coast. The loop completes via Prinos and Skala Prinos on the west coast, where sunset views toward Mount Athos on clear evenings reward a final night at the Skala Prinos camping area with electric hook-ups.
Campervan travellers should use official campgrounds at Golden Beach, Skala Prinos, and Limenas rather than roadside olive groves where farmers object. Fresh water and waste disposal exist at Skala Prinos aire; fuel is available in Limenas and Prinos. May and June bring green hills and empty beaches before peak season; September retains warm swimming with thinner crowds. Winter reduces ferry frequency and closes many tavernas — confirm Keramoti schedules before crossing, especially outside Easter to October. Two days covers the coastal loop and Aliki quarries; add time if you want a boat trip to the uninhabited islet of Thassopoula or a hike to Ypsario peak at 1,204 metres.
