Slovenian Lake Triangle

Radovljica → Lake Bohinj

About This Route

A fairytale drive connecting Slovenia's most iconic lakes. Start at the world-famous Lake Bled with its island church, then head deeper into the Triglav National Park to the wilder, more serene Lake Bohinj. The road follows the Sava Bohinjka river and is mostly flat with gentle curves. Perfect for late-afternoon cruising, stopping for 'Kremšnita' (cream cake) in Bled, and a refreshing hike to Savica waterfall.

Detailed Route Guide

The Slovenian Lake Triangle route connects two of the most celebrated lakes in the Eastern Alps in a 35-kilometre drive that moves from one of the most visited tourist sites in Central Europe to one of the most serene and relatively undiscovered. Lake Bled (Blejsko jezero) is Slovenia's most iconic image: a glacially carved lake dominated by a dramatic castle perched on a cliff above the water and an island in the middle of the lake reached by traditional pletna boats, topped by the Baroque Church of the Assumption. The effect on first seeing the lake — especially from the Ojstrica viewpoint above the southern shore, a 20-minute walk from the village — is genuinely breathtaking. The town around the lake is heavily touristed and the lakeside promenade can be very crowded in summer, but the lake itself, with its thermal springs that keep it unusually warm, remains beautiful regardless of the season.

The drive west from Bled follows the Sava Bohinjka river valley, initially through the town of Bohinjska Bistrica and then progressively narrowing into the gorge below the Triglav National Park boundary. Lake Bohinj (Bohinjsko jezero) — 12 kilometres west of Bled — is everything Bled is not: larger, wilder, surrounded by high peaks including the north faces of the Triglav range, and with no island, no castle, and no pletna boats. Its glacial waters are deeper, cooler, and cleaner than Bled, and the atmosphere of the lake shore (particularly at the western end near Ukanc and the Savica waterfall) is of an alpine wilderness that feels entirely different from the managed tourism of Bled. Bohinjci are proud of their lake's less-discovered character.

For a VW T3, the Lake Triangle route is one of the most comfortable drives in Slovenia: the valley road is flat throughout, the surfaces are well-maintained, and there are numerous stopping points for photography and swimming access. Parking at Bled town can be challenging in peak season — the P2 car park at the western end of the lake is the best large-vehicle option. At Bohinj, the Zlatorog Hotel car park and the western Stara Fužina road offer good parking for vans. The Savica waterfall is reached by a 1.5-kilometre walk from the final car park at the end of the road.

The best time to drive this route is early morning in late spring (May-June) when the meadow wildflowers are at their peak and the lake surface is mirror-flat in the absence of wind. September and October offer beautiful autumn colours with much reduced crowds. Summer midday (10am–4pm) in July and August brings heavy traffic and parking pressure at Bled — arrive before 9am or after 5pm for the best experience.
