Northern Andorra's wild park — Ordino approach on CS-370 with 8% grades to Sorteny botanical trails, alpine meadows, and Pyrenees peak views. WARNING: Final park road steep and narrow; summer-only for inexperienced drivers.
Sorteny Nature Park is Andorra's wildest accessible highland — a protected valley in the northern Ordino parish where Pyrenean botanical gardens meet alpine meadows, trout lakes sit at 2,300 metres, and the access road CS-370 climbs through 8% grades on narrow lanes to a trailhead that feels closer to French Pyrenees wilderness than duty-free Andorra la Vella. This roughly 25-kilometre out-and-back from Ordino is a half-day driving and hiking commitment: the road demands T3 respect on the final climb, the park demands boots for anything beyond the botanical garden.
Ordino provides the base — park the van at the village lot, visit the iron museum if morning allows, then take CS-370 north into the narrowing valley. The road is paved but narrows progressively; the final three kilometres to the park entrance at 1,960 metres gain 400 metres at sustained 7–8% — first or second gear for T3, watch for descending cyclists and occasional cattle on the road. The park entrance has limited parking; arrive before 10 AM in summer.
Sorteny's botanical garden at the road end showcases Pyrenean flora in labelled plots — gentians, edelweiss relatives, and endemic species that justify the drive even without hiking. Trails beyond climb to Estany de les Truites (Lake of Trout) and higher passes connecting to France's Pyrenees footpaths. Full summit hikes exceed 2,500 metres and require mountain fitness.
For VW T3 drivers, Sorteny is a morning mission from Ordino — climb cool, hike afternoon, descend before evening heat strains the engine on the steep lower section. Winter closes CS-370 snow-dependent; June through September is the reliable window. No camping in the park; Ordino guesthouses accept overnight vans. Pair with Valira valleys loop and Port Envalira for northern Andorra trilogy.
