Plitvice Lakes & Lika Highlands

One hundred and thirty kilometres from Plitvice to Gospić thread Croatia's interior highlands — a route that pairs the UNESCO terraced lakes with the empty karst plateaus of Lika, a region most coastal tourists never see despite driving the D1 motorway straight through it. The lakes demand a full day on foot: sixteen turquoise pools linked by boardwalks and waterfalls where photography is restricted to designated paths, and vehicle access stops at the park gates where Camping Korana and Borje handle overnight campervans outside the protected zone. Between lake day and highland driving, a classic or low-power campervan finds its natural pace on Lika's secondary roads — well paved, almost traffic-free, and gentle enough that coolant stress is minimal compared with Dalmatian mountain routes.

Rastoke, a detour north toward Slunj, is a mill village where the Korana River splits into dozens of miniature waterfalls between stone houses — a compact preview of Plitvice geology without the park entry queues, and guesthouse parking sometimes tolerates a quiet night if you ask at reception. The D1 and parallel Lika backroads south toward Gospić cross sheep-grazed karst where stone hay racks called kukci dot the fields and roadside stalls sell honey and rakija from farm gates. Senj on the Adriatic coast makes a worthwhile westward detour: a Venetian fortress town where the Velebit mountains drop sharply to the sea, and the harbour Stellplatz puts you within walking distance of restaurants before returning inland.

Plitvice parking fills by nine in the morning from June through August — arrive early or stay at Korana campsite and walk to Entrance 2 before day-trippers arrive from Zagreb and Split. The park prohibits overnight parking inside the gates; Borje and Korana campsites offer electric hook-ups and shuttle access. Gospić at the route's southern end has fuel, supermarkets, and a quiet municipal area for motorhomes, though Lika towns close early and Sunday shopping is limited. Wild camping on karst plateau is discouraged — stick to designated sites near Plitvice and Senj.

May delivers peak waterfall volume after snowmelt and keeps boardwalks uncrowded before summer coach convoys clog the D1. October brings mist rising from the lower lakes at dawn and empty highland roads where autumn light turns birch and oak gold along the Gospić approach. Winter closes some Plitvice upper-lake trails and can ice Lika backroads without warning — check Hrvatske Ceste road reports between November and March. Two days is the minimum: Plitvice upper and lower lakes on day one, Rastoke and the Lika highland drive to Gospić on day two, with Senj added if you want a coastal sunset before heading south.

Practical note for classic and low-power campervans: Lika secondary roads are gentle and well paved, but fuel and shops thin out on Sundays — fill up in larger towns. Never overnight inside Plitvice gates; Korana and Borje Autokamp are the reliable bases. Check Hrvatske Ceste if travelling November–March when ice can glaze highland lanes after rain.

Paklenica offers hiking for non-climbers on valley trails as well as big-wall routes — park at designated lots and carry water. Classic and low-power campervans should treat inland climbs as cool-down exercises, not races. Autokamp near Starigrad-Paklenica is the practical overnight; park overnighting and beach sleeping are illegal and policed.
