About This Route

A pilgrimage for cycling fans and lovers of rolling hills. This isn't the forest Ardennes, but the agricultural, cobbled hill country of Flanders. Famous for the spring classic cycling races, this route tackles iconic climbs like the 'Muur van Geraardsbergen'. Drive through charming villages, open fields, and steep cobbled streets.

Detailed Route Guide

The Flemish Ardennes is not the forest Ardennes of the south — it is something quite different and uniquely Flemish: a compact, intensely farmed hill country of cobbled climbs, windswept ridgelines, and centuries-old village churches, all set against a background of open agricultural panoramas. This area is globally famous as the battleground for the spring cycling classics — the Tour of Flanders (Ronde van Vlaanderen), one of the most prestigious one-day races in the world, has been fought over these very roads since 1913. Driving from Oudenaarde to Geraardsbergen, you follow in the wheel tracks of the greatest cyclists in history, through a landscape that has changed remarkably little in a century.

The Tour of Flanders Museum in Oudenaarde is the perfect starting point and one of the best sports museums in Belgium, bringing the race's history to life with archive footage, original jerseys, and interactive exhibits. The route then winds through the characteristic kopjes — short, vicious climbs that break the rider's rhythm and demand raw power. The Koppenberg, a narrow cobbled lane rising at 22%, is one of the most feared climbs in professional cycling. The Paterberg and Wijnberg offer similar challenges. The crescendo is the Muur van Geraardsbergen — the Wall — a steep cobbled street winding up to a 10th-century chapel where, on race day, tens of thousands of fans create an atmosphere unlike anything else in sport.

For VW T3 owners, this route requires genuine respect and realistic expectations. These are short but steep climbs — the Koppenberg reaches 22%, which will immediately overwhelm most standard T3 engines. The critical strategy is momentum: arrive at the base of each climb with as much speed as you can safely build on the approach, then drop to first gear and commit. Do not stop on a cobbled climb in a loaded T3 — restarting on steep, wet cobbles can be very difficult. The good news is the climbs are short (under 1km typically), followed by gentle descents and flat inter-climb valleys where the engine can recover. Choose a dry day — wet cobbles reduce grip dramatically.

This route is particularly magical in spring (March–April) when the cycling season is in full swing and local café terraces fill with fans. The Tour of Flanders typically takes place on the first Sunday of April — driving these roads in the week before or after the race is a unique experience. Autumn is beautiful with agricultural colours. Summer is relaxed and green. The winter months are quiet and atmospheric, with the grey cobbles and bare fields possessing a melancholic beauty all their own.
