Medieval island castle on Lake Galvė — Lithuania's postcard landmark plus Užutrakis manor, Karaim kibinai cuisine, and forest roads around the Trakai Historical National Park lake district west of Vilnius.
Trakai is Lithuania's most photographed landmark — a red-brick Gothic castle rising from an island in Lake Galvė, surrounded by a constellation of interconnected lakes that once formed the fortified heartland of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Grand Duke Kęstutis and his son Vytautas built the island castle in the fourteenth century as a defensive stronghold against the Teutonic Knights; today it houses a history museum and draws half a million visitors annually. This roughly 55-kilometre day loop from Vilnius west to Trakai and through the surrounding lake district is Lithuania's easiest and most rewarding half-day escape from the capital — flat roads, maximum cultural impact, and kibinai pastries that alone justify the drive.
The route follows A4 west from Vilnius for twenty-eight kilometres to Trakai — a straight, well-maintained highway with no mechanical challenges for any van. Trakai town sits on a peninsula between lakes; parking near the castle fills by mid-morning in summer, so arrive before ten or after four. The castle is reached by a wooden footbridge from the mainland — allow two hours for the museum, courtyard, and lake circumnavigation on foot. The restored interiors display Grand Duchy armour, medieval artefacts, and models of the castle's evolution.
Beyond the castle, Užutrakis Manor on the opposite lake shore offers neoclassical elegance — terraced gardens designed by Édouard André, the same landscape architect behind Monte Carlo's gardens, with lake views that rival the castle itself. Karaim Street in old Trakai preserves the wooden houses of Lithuania's Turkic Karaim minority, who were brought by Vytautas as castle guards and still serve kibinai — crescent-shaped meat pastries — from family kitchens. Senieji Trakai (Old Trakai) holds the Gothic church marking Vytautas's birthplace, a quieter counterpoint to the tourist centre.
For VW T3 travellers, Trakai is ideal first-day Lithuania content — no grades, excellent asphalt, and multiple parking options on the town periphery if the castle lot is full. Combine with an afternoon return via forest roads around Lake Luka (Skaistis) for a complete lake loop. May through September peak season; winter castle on frozen lake is magical but museum hours reduce. Pair with the Vilnius-Kaunas corridor to the south or Hill of Crosses to the north for a multi-day central Lithuania itinerary.
