Vidzeme Forest & Cēsis Uplands

Vidzeme is northern Latvia's forest upland — a region of pine and birch wilderness, sandstone gorges, and villages so quiet that storks nest on chimney tops undisturbed. This roughly 43-kilometre loop from Valmiera south through the Amata gorge and Āraiši lake fortress toward Cēsis follows gravel and asphalt forest roads through a landscape that feels empty even in summer, where the Gauja National Park's northern fringe merges with working forest and the occasional Soviet company town preserved as heritage.

Valmiera anchors the northern end — a Hanseatic town on the Gauja with medieval ruins, a craft brewery, and the practical services needed before entering quieter forest roads. From Valmiera, regional roads wind south through mixed forest toward the Amata River gorge — sandstone cliffs, rapids, and cliff-top trails popular with kayakers and hikers. The gorge viewpoint requires a short walk from parking; the Amata's amber-coloured water cuts through Devonian sandstone in a miniature version of the Gauja valley drama.

Āraiši lake fortress south of Cēsis reconstructs a ninth-century Latgalian settlement on an island — an open-air archaeology museum that pairs well with the Amata gorge. The surrounding forest roads are gravel but well-maintained, passable for vans in dry weather at moderate speed. Zvārtes Rock — a mushroom-shaped sandstone formation in the Amata valley — offers an easy fifteen-minute walk from roadside parking, a perfect picnic stop.

Līgatne paper mill village preserves Soviet industrial heritage in a forest setting — riverside trails, a famous secret bunker tour (Cold War command centre), and the quiet atmosphere of a company town where the factory defined life for generations. Cēsis at the southern end connects to the Gauja valley route — castle ruins, brewery courtyard, and old town cobbles.

For classic and low-power campervan travellers, Vidzeme forest roads are manageable — no extreme grades, but gravel sections require reduced speed and caution after rain. Allow two days; camp at Valmiera periphery, Līgatne guesthouses, or Cēsis. May through October; mushroom season September–October. Pair with Gauja valley for a complete northern Latvia week.

Fuel before leaving Cēsis or Valmiera — interior villages thin out. Birdsong, logging tracks, and lake pull-offs define the pace; overnight at forest campsites or farm stays with permission. Logging trucks use some forest connectors on weekdays — pull into passing places early and expect mud spray after rain.
