The dramatic SH8 climb to Llogara Pass (1,043 m) and the serpentine descent to Albania's Ionian Riviera — Dhërmi beaches, Himarë coves, and views of Corfu. WARNING: 8–10% grades on 15 hairpins; Albania's most demanding van road.
The Llogara Pass descent is Albania's most dramatic driving experience — a road that climbs from the Adriatic port of Vlorë through fifteen numbered hairpins to 1,043 metres on the Ceraunian Mountains, then plunges south toward the Ionian Sea in a series of switchbacks where each corner reveals another tier of white-pebble beach, olive grove, and turquoise water stretching toward the Greek island of Corfu. SH8 is paved and maintained for the Riviera tourism boom, but the 8–10% grades on the pass itself make this the Balkan route where air-cooled van drivers must plan their climb with the same seriousness as Montenegro's serpentines.
Vlorë anchors the northern end — Albania's independence city with a waterfront promenade, naval museum, and practical services for van travellers entering the Riviera from Tirana (2 hours north). Fuel and supplies here before the climb; options thin on the coastal strip below. The ascent begins immediately south of Vlorë on SH8 — the road gains 700 metres in eight kilometres via hairpins carved into forested slopes. T3 drivers should climb in first or second gear, stop at the Llogara restaurant terrace for cooling and the classic panorama (Ionian Sea, Corfu, Palasa canyon), and descend only when the engine temperature is normal.
The descent to Dhërmi is where the Riviera reveals itself — olive terraces step down to white-pebble coves where the water shifts from deep blue to emerald in metres. Dhërmi village clusters above the beaches; parking is limited in summer but several small lots accept vans on weekdays. The road continues south through Palasa canyon viewpoints to Himarë — a cliff-top town with Greek-influenced architecture, a ruined castle, and seafood restaurants where grilled fish arrives from boats below.
For camping, Dhërmi and Himarë have seasonal autocamps and guesthouse parking. The coastal road below the pass is narrow with occasional 6% grades but manageable compared to the pass itself. Visit May through October; July and August bring heavy traffic and limited parking. Spring offers wildflowers on the pass and empty beaches. Combine with Albanian Riviera Coast route southward and Berat–Gjirokastër for a complete southern Albania week.
