Serra da Estrela Mountain Pass

Covilhã → Seia

About This Route

Climb to the 'Star Mountain'—the highest point in mainland Portugal (reaching 1,993m at Torre). The road takes you through a landscape of massive boulders, glacial lagoons, and deep valleys. WARNING: The climb is long and steady with several steep sections and winding bends. In winter, this is the only place in Portugal with snow. A dramatic highland experience that demands a healthy engine but offers infinite horizon views over the Portuguese interior.

Detailed Route Guide

The Serra da Estrela — the Star Mountain — is one of the most dramatic and least-visited mountain landscapes in all of Iberia. Reaching 1,993 metres at Torre, its highest point, this massif forms the spine of central Portugal and is the only place in the country where snow falls reliably every winter. The road from Covilhã to Seia crosses this spectacular plateau, climbing from the textile town of Covilhã through bands of pine and heathland into a boulder-strewn lunar plateau that feels far removed from the rest of Portugal. The landscape is ancient and elemental: enormous rounded granite boulders — some the size of houses — lie scattered as if dropped from a great height, the legacy of glacial action during the last Ice Age. Glacial valleys (covões) slice deep into the flanks of the range, and the Lagoa Comprida — a long, narrow glacial lake — shimmers at high elevation in hues of grey and blue depending on the sky above.

The Serra da Estrela Natural Park was established in 1976 and is the largest protected area in Portugal. Its human history is equally rich: the mountain was settled by Lusitanian tribes before Rome arrived, and the high plateau was used for centuries as summer grazing land (transhumance) by shepherd communities. Evidence of this pastoral past survives in the form of dry-stone shepherd shelters (abrigos) scattered across the heath. The village of Manteigas, in the glacial valley below the main ridge, is the natural hub for exploring the park and produces the famous Queijo da Serra — a creamy, buttery sheep's cheese that is one of Portugal's most celebrated culinary products. The cheese, the fresh mountain bread, and locally made aguardente brandy make for an excellent van-side picnic at altitude.

For VW T3 owners, this route demands respect and careful preparation. The climb from Covilhã to Torre involves sustained gradients of 8–12% with hairpin bends, and the total elevation gain exceeds 1,600 metres. An underpowered or poorly maintained air-cooled engine will struggle significantly, particularly in summer when ambient temperatures are already high. Water and coolant must be checked before departure. Drive in lower gears throughout the climb, allow the engine to cool at the summit before descending, and test brakes before any long downhill. The reward for completing the crossing is profound: the views from the plateau are infinite in all directions, and the sensation of being in a genuine high-altitude wilderness — in Portugal, of all places — is entirely unexpected. The descent to Seia on the western flank is gentler than the eastern climb.

The Serra da Estrela is a year-round destination with radically different characters by season. In winter (December–March), the Torre area receives snow almost every year, and the access road is often closed or restricted to vehicles with snow chains; the ski resort at Torre is the only one in Portugal. The spectacle of a snowfield in the Portuguese interior is genuinely surreal and worth the effort if conditions allow. Spring (April–June) brings dramatic skies, blooming heather, and melt-water cascades down the boulders. Summer is the most accessible time but also the busiest — the plateau can be surprisingly busy on August weekends. Autumn is arguably the finest season: clear, bright days, golden heather, and almost no other visitors on weekday mornings.
